Commanding Top Dollar for Organic Corn and Soybeans
My name is Garry Curren and I farm 300 acres organically in central Ohio. After eighteen years as a businessman I decided to change occupations and began farming. Becoming an organic certified producer was the only justifiable means financially to enter the Agri-sector and make a profit. The year 2001 was my first year of being certified and concluded that hauling grain to the local elevator was no longer a choice. I had been researching various storage and drying facilities when a neighbor handed me a sales catalog from CMC.
One of my greatest challenges was to produce a quality food grade corn, soybeans and wheat product to maximize the premiums associated with the organic marketplace. Premiums are placed on non-splits, kernel damage and high test weights.
After reading about CMC’s Pressure Cure® system with no stirrators, I was quite curious to see how it worked. I contacted Jerome Sannes of CMC who educated me on the benefits of Pressure Cure®. Being an engineer by trade, I was truly impressed by the system as well as the cost with drying the grain.
After talking with several other farmers who owned and operated the system for several years, I had two 18’ six ring drying bins installed in 2005. My results have been everything I anticipated. Over three years of use, the lowest test weights on corn was 57.5 and the highest was 60.9. My corn has always met the strict standards for food grade. The cost of a drying over the last three years has been 1.13 cents per bushel, per point of moisture.
Splits are always a concern with food grade soybeans, but now I can harvest them around 16-18% and virtually eliminate this problem. The Pressure Cure® system works very well on beans, bringing them down to 13%.
With this system I have no dockage issues taking away my profits. The system has delivered everything as expected. The combination of curing, conditioning and storage allows me to demand top dollar for my grains.
